The Devon Family History Society has a useful website: http://www.devonfhs.org.uk

They list several variant spellings: Puddicombe Puddicomb Puddecombe Pudicombe Putticombe

Puddicombe is the most common spelling, but taking all the variations into account, the Society records list 98 marriages in Devon (1754 - 1837) and 31 Burials (1813 - 1837). The November 1990 edition of their magazine has details of the Wills of James Puddicombe (died 1679) and Stephen Puddicombe (died 1716).

There is least one publication by a Puddicombe - "Early Piety Displayed in the Holy Life & Happy Death of Ann Pitney" by Alexander Puddicombe (pub 1854 J Mason, London). "Allen Raine" was the pen-name of Anne Adalisa Puddicombe (nee Evans) who lived from 1836 to 1908.

Two Officers & seven Soldiers named Puddicombe died in the Great War.

In the 1851 Census there were 29 households recorded with one or more Puddicombes in them - 28 were in Devon.

Other websites include: http://www.familyhistory.com which has a "Puddicombe" message board. http://www.whitepages.ancestry.com (an American listings service) which has 47 current Puddicombes living in the States. http://www.puddicombefarms.com which is the site of a Winery in Canada run by that branch of the family. There is very little family history on there, but it's a good site anyway.

I've pieced together various records to trace our branch back to 1656 - the birth of John Puddicombe who married Mary Stephens at Coldridge on 22nd November 1681. Their descendants mainly lived in and around Bideford, which was a major port; hence the emigration of many Puddicombes to Canada & America, where there are now probably more of them than those of us left in the UK.

There's a short history of Bideford at http://www.experiencedevon.com/bideford.html

In Canada, the Puddicombes married into the Balkwill family. A Canadian chap called Ken Balkwill has done absolutely loads of meticulous research into the Balkwill & Puddicombe families.

There was an infamous Alexander Puddicombe b. 13th June 1782 who was murdered in 1819, leaving his wife, Betsy Johns to bring up their six young children; William, Elizabeth, Mary, John, Robert & Alexander. I've got virtually complete records of the family line descending from Robert and will happily give details to anyone who wants to contact me.
